More than just numbers

We all have a lot of numbers that are important in our lives, like birthdays and phone numbers of our loved ones. Here, we take a look at some other numbers that should in fact be given far more importance if we are looking to take good care of our health. These include your cholesterol levels, blood pressure, glucose levels, resting heart rate, and C-reactive protein. And it’s important that we not only know these numbers, but also know how to keep them under control.

  1. Cholesterol: When a diagnosis suggests a high cholesterol level, it indicates a high ‘LDL’ level (Low Density Lipids) which also known as the ‘bad’ cholesterol. And one thing most of us already know is that we should do whatever we can to keep this cholesterol level (LDL) under control, like eat healthy, avoid fast-food and work out more often. But is knowing all this enough. Not unless you actually follow the rules to keep your cholesterol level in check. Set yourself a target and take appropriate steps to reach it. Starting your day with a glass of orange juice or a bowl of oatmeal for breakfast can help you with this.
    Number to remember: Your LDL should be less than 130mg/dl and more than 40mg/dl
  2. Blood Pressure: Again, something that most of claim to know but very few do what is necessary to control. A high blood pressure can eventually lead to heart attacks, heart failure and kidney failure.
    The simplest way to keep your blood pressure under control is to control your diet (avoid junk food and excess salt in your diet) and to relax, since stress usually has a tendency to shoot your BP higher than normal. Talking to your loved ones about your problems can sometimes help.
    Number to remember: No prizes for guessing, your normal BP should be 120/80 mm Hg
  3. Glucose: To be more precise, your fasting glucose which can be an indicator for diabetes. If you see your fasting blood glucose levels increasing, you want to watch out, because with this increases your risk of developing diabetes. Diabetes in turn can lead to various complications including heart diseases and eye damage.
    Try losing some weight, which is the best way of lowering your blood glucose level as it improves your body’s insulin sensitivity.
    Number to remember: Your normal fasting blood glucose level should be in the range of 90 to 120 mg/dl
  4. Resting heart rate: Studies show that a resting heart rate of more than 75 beats per minute is never a good sign and such individuals are at a risk of having a heart attack or other cardiac complications.
    Low intensity cardio training with occasional training at a high intensity helps bring down your resting heart rate.
    Number to remember: The typical resting heart rates in adults should be in the range of 55 to 65 beats per minute.
  5. C-reactive protein: Lower your CRP levels to add years to your heart. An elevated CRP is often a sign of an arterial inflammation and other cardiac problems.
    Maintain your daily dose of vitamins (especially vitamin C) and magnesium which help decrease CRP levels.
    Number to remember: Your CRP levels should be less than 1 mg/l.
