Celebrate World Heart Day with a pledge

First organized in 1999 by the World Heart Federation, World Heart Day is celebrated every year on the 29th of September (post 2011, until which World Heart Day was celebrated on the last Sunday of September), with the intention to promote more awareness about cardiac problems faced by the world and the necessary steps to avoid them.

Heart diseases claim 17.3 million lives each year, a majority of which are pre-mature deaths, in developing countries.

This year, World Heart Day aims to erase a myth that is quite common in most countries; that cardiac diseases and stroke are conditions that mainly affect aged and male population. But the truth is that cardiac diseases affect as many women as men. In fact, heart disease is the number one cause of deaths in women, causing one in three female deaths at a rate of one death per minute. The fact that a lot of people are still unaware about the risk of cardiac diseases in women and children makes it even more dangerous.

Today, a lot of people are shocked to know that a lot of children are also vulnerable to heart diseases. The risk of a heart disease can begin even before a child is born and increase further depending on the lifestyle as the child grows. Especially today, when kids are exposed to unhealthy diets and lifestyle and the lack of physical activities, all add to the cardiovascular risk among our youth.

For the last ten years, AHI has treated more than 150,000 patients, performing some of the most complicated surgeries in the country, providing a new lease of life to countless patients considered to be inoperable at one stage. Our Preventive Cardiology and Cardiac Rehabilitation department is one of the best in India in providing post-operative care to patients.

But we’ve all heard the old saying, ‘Prevention is better than cure’. And the first step to fight cardiac problems is its prevention. This World Heart Day, pledge to take a few simple precautions to prevent heart problems.

Quit smoking

Eat healthy

Exercise regularly

Live stress-free

Undergo a health check-up regularly

Just a few simple steps, but steps that can take your heart a long way.
