Running with all our hearts at the Standard Chartered Marathon 2012

This is the time of year Mumbai puts on its running shoes, world-class style … The Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon is here. In less than a week, on January 15, the mega-even our city eagerly awaits will kick off. This 9th edition of  Asia’s Largest and Richest Marathon is no small run, and the total number of participants is around 38.775! This Marathon is also the single largest fund raising event for charity in India, and has been given National Status by the Athletics Federation of India.

And, like with every year, AHI is once again the official medical partner for the Mumbai Marathon.

AHI will set up 10 medical stations across the 42 km stretch, with a total of almost 350 volunteers that include doctors, nurses and paramedical staff, all specially trained and equipped to handle medical emergencies. Are you running? Run with peace of mind because AHI has these 10 centres PLUS 2 base camps (at the start and finish) that will watch over you and take care of you.

A large medical team is necessary to ensure that world-class aid is readily available. The full marathon runners will be prioritized in four groups, namely below four hours; four hours to under five hours; five hours to under six hours and six hours and above, while the half marathoners will also be prioritized in four groups, namely under two hours; two hours to under two hours 30 minutes; two hours 30 minutes to under three hours and three hours and above.

But that’s not the only thing about AHI that catches the eye at the Marathon.

Every year AHI has 75 runners participating at the Marathon. No big deal right? Wait … did you know that these runners are cardiac patients who have recovered from heart attacks? Last year Mr. Jatin Parikh even completed the 42 km run, and ten others completed the half marathon.

This year, another 75 of our patients have been training for the Marathon, for weeks, under the guidance of Dr. Ashish Contractor, at AHI’s Preventive Cardiology and Cardiac Rehabilitation department. Who will be at the finish line this year? Find out on the 15th of January. Make sure you have your running shoes on.
