Getting moving in a steady, supervised program is one of the best gifts you can give your heart. Be it walking or easy running, any serious walker or runner will tell you that the right footwear is critical because your walking and running experience will be that much more profitable and satisfying… because it is just plain enjoyable.

Your shoes do so much to make exercising enjoyable. And how much you enjoy your exercising can make or break your workout experience. Your shoes have a big role to play: they make contact with the surface and by helping provide a good grip, support, cushioning, flexibility, durability you will make it easily through your walk and runs.

Knowing how to buy running shoes is important. There are so many available, the choice can be brain-numbing. And many people make the same mistake: they fall for the high-powered marketing and go for the expensive footwear.

Of course, all sports equipment is brilliantly marketed. Indeed, it needs to be! One of the biggest reasons is that a lot of research and development goes into their design and manufacture. The cost of R&D by the many international sports shoe manufacturers alone put together would amount to hundreds of millions of dollars. The entire industry is worth billions of dollars worldwide. It is the marketing that pays for the R&D. So can you blame anyone for getting carried away by all the high-powered marketing? And the shoes are so beautiful! Colours, textures, shapes, ….. and all that tech talk that explains the futuristic and advanced features. Before you know it, you’ve made a large payment … for the er … wrong shoes.

BUT 90% OF THE EQUIPMENT YOU NEED IS YOUR OWN TWO FEET. THE SHOES ARE ON YOUR FEET FOR A LITTLE PROTECTION AND COMFORT. IT ISN’T POSSIBLE TO WALK BAREFOOT ON GRASS IN TODAY’S MEGA CITIES BUT THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN THE IDEAL.

NEVER FORGET THAT YOU ARE A EVERYDAY PERSON WALKING OR RUNNING FOR YOUR HEALTH. YOU ARE NOT A MODEL ON A CATWALK. NEVER GET CARRIED AWAY WITH STYLE STATEMENTS. AND YOU WILL BE SWEATING SOON ENOUGH, WHICH IS NOT ALL THAT STYLISH, IS IT?

If you really want to buy a more ‘advanced’ shoe, go for cross trainers. They are built to do exactly what the description suggests: work aCROSS different activities. They accommodate and facilitate a variety of sports, so they are sturdier, which is important for the simple, daily walker or runner. Your feet will be safer. And pssssssssst …. cross trainers last that much longer. 😉

There are, of course, a few things you can safely IGNORE while buying shoes:

  1. The Color should be the least of your concerns. Wonderfully coloured shoes can also leave your feet  black and blue. Ill-fitting shoes can cause blisters, shoe bites, could provide zero support and hurt the feet.
  2. ThePrice – You certainly don’t have to pay the fancy amounts .. but that should not be the sole criterion. Better shoes cost a bit more. And a sensible shoe is a investment in your health.
  3. The Choice — You don’t need the latest American or European shoe sensation.  Indian brands offer perfectly good options.

Conclusion: Walk to the nearest Indian branded shoe store and you will find EVERYTHING you need right there.

And never forget: THINK FOR YOUR FEET, AND THINK WITH YOUR FEET.
