A message from AHI. 22 October 2011.

50 doctors at Asian heart stay back all night for patient care for the 3rd night in a row:
The patient is the real underdog- not the nurses anymore.

What has started with the unfortunate demise of Beena Baby; a diligent highly professional nurse, who’s suicide was for purely personal reasons,  has now been turned into a nightmare by vested interests. I am appalled at the silliness of it all…more so by the myopic nature with which the media has been observing the play of events.

So where were my doctors and I on 19th, 20th and 21st October when the nurses went on strike. I watched over my ICU patients all night along with 50 other doctors and 50 nurses.

Its not for nothing that  Asian Heart Institute is known as one of the most renowned centres of excellence in cardiac care. Indias highest certified hospital was not built in a day; and was not built without quality training as the very fulcrum of its foundation.

Asian Heart Institute stands for patient safety and highest level of patient care. The striking staff walked out leaving behind critically ill patients who were on life support and life saving medicines. Moreover the striking staff has also threatened other staff who were willing to and were looking after these critical patients. I am told calls have been made to the family members of the working staff; threatening them with dire consequences.

The AHI management went out of its way to agree to the demands on 19th October’11 (Wed). We started returning certificates. However the striking staff backed out. Again, on 20th Oct’11 (Thu) again a meeting was held with the representatives; wherein AHI agreed to all their demands and was signed by both parties. However, they backed out again.

On 21st October, a third round of meeting was held between the management and the representatives and the following was agreed upon:

1. The nursing certificates will be returned to the nurses

2. The hospital experience certificate will be given to those nursing staff who have worked for or more than 2 years

3. Staff who have not worked for 2 years, will only be issued a certificate that will state the duration of work .

4.  More importantly, we will re-interview these nurses because some of them have turned vandals. Out of the 170 striking staff, over 140 have confided to my nursing Director that they want to join back. They are being victimized by the 30 odd people who have no sympathy for the deceased; nor the care and safety of patients; but are just creating nuisance value, by not letting patients enter the hospital. Also creating situations where critically ill patients can be harmed by not allowing nurses on duty to come in.

The nursing staff who will rejoin will have to give a guarantee/commitment for the remaining part of their 2 year contract. There is no law of the land that says anything against minimum employment period against training. All Governments/armed forces/ medical services have a bond for people passing their MBBS and post graduation (After MBBS, a medical graduate is required to sign a bond with the government to serve in rural areas for a year, or to pay up if he or she opts to skip this.

Asian Heart will weather this with dignity. We are an ethical enterprise; and will not let any vandals or miscreants enter our hospital. We will not compromise on patient care and safety. We cannot stoop; we cannot bend and we will continue to be the worlds best cardiac hospital.
